Modeling of Hazardous Phenomena

Industrial risk management: a priority that must not be overlooked!

Need support?

As part of a hazard study or risk analysis, it is often necessary to assess the effects and severity of accident scenarios. Drawing on our experience in industrial risk management, we support our clients in their efforts—whether regulatory or otherwise—to determine the effects of a hazardous event.

Our Services

Our specialized consultants perform the following modeling tasks:

  • Calculation of flow rates at liquid, gas, or two-phase leaks,

  • Dispersion of toxic and/or flammable gases,

  • Confined explosions of flammable gases, vapors, or dust—verification of the sizing of vents and explosion hatches in accordance with NFPA 68, NF EN 14494 (gases), and NF EN 14491 (dust) standards,

  • BLEVE,

  • Rupture of pressurized vessels,

  • Conventional boil-over and thin-film boil-over – pressurization of an atmospheric tank caught in a fire,

  • Flammable liquid pool fire,

  • Flaming jet of a gaseous or two-phase discharge,

  • Warehouse fire and dispersion of toxic smoke,

  • etc.

The impact distances are then used in mapping software to:

  • Map the potential impact on internal or external stakeholders,

  • Determine the severity of impact on facilities, nearby residents, and the immediate environment,

  • The final deliverable summarizes the assumptions, methodology, and conclusions of the modeling.

Our tools

  • PHAST by DNV Software, versions 6.7 to 9,

  • Flumilog,

  • Models from professional guidelines (GTDLI, UFIP, UIC),

  • In-house models based on reference works (INERIS, TNO),

  • QGIS for mapping and spatial queries.

Our strengths

All of our modelers are trained in the phenomenology of major scenarios and risk analysis methods, enabling them to assist in defining scenarios prior to modeling. Through their work, they understand the context in which results are used and can provide guidance on these topics while advising on the potential limitations of the methods.
